Varicose Veins vs. Spider Veins: How To Spot The Difference And Treat Them Effectively

In our busy lives, we often ignore our most single important asset: our body. We put off dealing with certain health issues, and make excuses for why we still haven’t seen a doctor. One of the most common conditions that arises, especially as we get older, is the circulatory function of our legs and it’s impact on our everyday life.

Over time, we start to develop pain, swelling, and other symptoms in our legs that make it hard to walk and do our daily functions. This condition, better known as venous insufficiency, affects nearly one out of two people above the age of 50 and about 20% of the people under that age. You might’ve heard the terms before, but what exactly are varicose veins and spider veins and how do you know the difference? It’s time to stop guessing and know the facts that will help you take control of your health.

1. What do they look like?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted, swollen veins that can be seen through the skin. They are blue or purple in color and commonly appear on thighs, inside of the leg, back of the calves, or feet. Spider veins are the younger brother of varicose veins. They are smaller, twisted veins that can be seen closer to the skin’s surface than varicose veins. Spider veins can be red, blue or purple in color and look like spider webs or tree branches.

2. What do they mean for my health?

Varicose veins are usually a symptom of a much more serious disease known as “venous insufficiency”. Left untreated, this disease leads to complications, such as infection, blood clots, trophic ulcers, bleeding and even skin cancer. In many cases, spider veins are a symptom of a pathological condition called venous hypertension, which is when you have high blood pressure inside your veins.

3. How can I treat them?

To treat spider veins, we use a minimally invasive procedure with a Nd Yag Laser. This treatment delivers immediate results, and allow you to return to normal activities, such as walking, on the same day. It’s which is a non-invasive painless procedure, which will have you back on your feet the same day, as well.
